The Lowdown: Rick Ross “Ashes To Ashes”
Rick Ross’s latest mixtape Ashes to Ashes has been released as a holiday treat to fans. It was endorsed on artists twitter pages such as Wiz Khalifa, Diddy and MC Hammer to name a few. It has tons of features such as Wiz, Diddy, T.I., Drake, Wale, Ne-Yo, Birdman, Aaliyah and more. Here are 3 personal favorites:
9 Piece (feat. T.I.): This is the first track I heard off the mixtape before it was released and the shit goes hard. The beat and hook are similar to Rickys hit record “Blowing Money Fast” featuring Styles P which was produced by Lex Luger as well. Although, I don’t see how authentic it is that T.I. raps about selling 8 balls considering he hosts a show on MTV called Road To Redemption which encourages teenagers to avoid spending a life of crime.
Retrosuperfuture (feat. Wiz Khalifa): Here is another good track featuring Wiz, who just does the hook. I hoping for a verse, but he did his thing…and of course it’s about weed.
Even Deeper (feat. Barry White): this the favorite track off the mixtape. Ricky’s energetic flow over the soulful Barry White sample, “I’m Gonna Love You Just A Little More Baby” flipped by Cashous Clay was dope. If Barry were alive I highly doubt he would approve of a former cop morphing his heartfelt love song into a song about fucking bitches and making dirty money – but it sounds cool and is a definite repeat. It continues Ricky’s style of using soulful samples from other heavy-set artists like himself as Biggie did before him.
Some say this mixtape could have been sold as an album, and it’s tracks like these that make this mixtape well-worth the free download. – Jon Edwards
